Weekly Wonderings: February 22nd, 2012

So today is my wonderful mother’s birthday! Yay! Happy Birthday to the best mom ever!

This weekend is …..

PIN 1

Which means tons of pretty dresses and hopefully good speeches and wins. (I LOVED The Artist along with the rest of the world). If I had enough free time, I would definitely be throwing an Oscar viewing party. These pretty pins just have me so inspired and wishing I had the time. How great are these ideas? Bingo, Ballots and Popcorn!

Handy House Tip #7: The Internet

This post is for all of you who don’t understand how the internet works…. (hint hint Lottie).  A few weeks ago, Lottie called me when I was away because the internet was not cooperating with her. I told her to unplug the router… and all I heard was silence on the other end. So this is my basic lesson on the glories of your wireless router and cable box:

  1. Internet comes from your cable
  2. It is directed from either your wall outlet or from your cable box
  3. It is tend put into your modem, which then sends the internet to your wireless router
  4. The wireless router  then sends the signal out wirelessly to your devices

Hints:

If your wireless is not working, simply unplug the router for a few seconds.

If that doesn’t work, take a Cat-5 cable (you know an old fashioned internet cord) and plug into the modem to make sure the internet is working properly, if not restart the modem by unplugging it for 10 seconds.

Hope this helps!

Butternut Squash

DSC02118
So I love butternut squash, whether it be in soup or ravioli. My roommate Lotti found this recipe and I have been hooked from the first bite. Beware though the chopping and peeling a squash takes some effort. I recommend it for a day when you need to work out some energy!

Ingredients:
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 1/4 pounds butternut squash
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
  1. Place pecans on an ungreased baking sheet. Toast at 350 degrees F  for 5 to 8 minutes.
  2. Peel the squash, and remove the seeds. Cut into 1/2 inch cubes. There will be about 6 cups squash. THIS TAKES EFFORT. Best to cut the squash in half first, and work on each section separately.
  3. Melt butter  in a heavy large skillet over low heat. Add onion and saute until very tender, about 15 minutes. Add squash and toss to coat. Cover. Cook until squash is tender but still holds it shape, stirring frequently, about 15 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. .
  4. Stir in half of the pecans and half of the parsley. Transfer mixture to bowl. Sprinkle with remaining pecans and parsley.
  5. Enjoy!

Canvas Art Tree: Valentine’s Decor

So this tree I made. Yeah, it was looking a little lonely with Valentine’s day around the corner so with a little glitter love, it perked right up!

Gracious Gift: Mini Frying Pan

DSC02013

So my mom got me this mini frying pan, at first I was quite trepid. What is the point of a frying pan that just holds one egg, I viewed it much like the Ipad. Fun but not needed. Then Lotti and I tried it out. Opinions were changed that first time. Eggs came out round and pretty plus you didn’t have to get a huge pan dirty. It’s great when you just want one egg in the morning. Certainly, I wouldn’t recommend it if you were cooking four eggs every morning, but for us, it’s perfect. Much like my Ipad, my mini egg frying pan changed my mind as well. It would make a cute gift for someone moving into their first apartment.

P.S. I’ll post the winner of my first giveaway sometime this weekend! Look out!

Oh goodness, only 13 days till Valentines day. Time to get my stuff in order, pronto.  I have cards to make, and cakes to bake! I thought this week, I’d share my favorite thing I did for last Valentine’s Day. I hope it inspires you to have one of your own because it was an absolute blast.

Last year, I had a Valentine’s Day Crafternoon, here are some of my favorite photos from it:
