Weekly Wonders: May 23rd, 2012

I don’t know why, but recently I have been in the mood for watermelon things. Maybe its because summer is almost here and watermelon is the quintessential summer fruit. It’s like mainly water and in the hot Floridian summer sun, it’s a necessity. The only problem is all these things are for parties. Guess I should think about having a summer party soon!

Weekly Wonders: May 16th, 2012

It will be Memorial Day soon, and even though I am not in the country to celebrate, I still spend way too much time on Pinterest looking for inspiration. Inspiration for what, I cannot tell you. Sometimes, I feel like I can pin the whole world. Everything gets its own little board and its own little pin. I swear Pinterest was made for perfectionists. I get lost sometimes looking at different pins. I’ve never been into full out Patriotism, red is my least favorite color. Yet all these pretty dishes make me want to burst into “God Bless America”!

Weekly Wonders: May 9th, 2012

Mother’s Day is this Sunday. Are you prepared? I am halfway across the world, well not really. Just Paris. (ha, just) Anyways, if case you are not 100% prepared, here is some inspiration for some pretty gifts. Some homemade, if that’s your fancy. Some not, if that’s your style.

Packing Tip #1: Paper

  PIN 1

One of the first problems I encountered when packing my apartment was what to do with my dishes and glasses. I do not have felt protectors for each plate a la Martha Stewart. I also do not have the boxes they originally came in. So I did what every normal person does: ask anyone they see. Luckily it only took me asking four people, my roommate’s mom knew the perfect solution: packing paper. She actually had a better idea: newspaper. She said to go the newspaper printer and get the end of the roll paper. It’s free and isn’t printed. But I had no idea where the nearest printing press was and had only a few hours till my parents arrived. Enter panic mode, I needed to hide as quickly as possible all my kitchen accoutrements before my parents saw how much I accumulated over 3 years.  Thus U-Haul to the rescue! At their stores (which are everywhere), you can buy 200 sheets for $9.99. Don’t be alarmed by the size of the box. It looks small, but there is a ton of paper. I bought two and had to return the second. I used barely half to my entire kitchen and I have a lot of dishes. Don’t be afraid to cut the paper, you only need one or two  layers for each piece. We ended up cutting it into eighths at one point.

How to: Clean Silver

    DSC02264

When packing, I realized I had not been taking the best care of some silver jewelry, i.e. I did nothing to it and it tarnished. I was in the midst of packing and not going to go buy silver cleaner. That would be just one more thing to pack and scare my father  (“Why do you have silver cleaner… you are in college, use a little elbow grease..”). Thank goodness for the powers of the internet. One simple search and up popped my solution. It was even eco-friendly. Hallelujah! I would even venture to bet that you have all the ingredients at home….

Aluminum Foil

Baking Soda

Boiling water

Directions:

1) Line a heat proof dish with aluminum foil (shiny side up). Boil water.

2) Place silver item in the dish. Pour boiling water till item is submerged. Sprinkle baking soda over item. (It will bubble and smell gross)

3) Wait 15 minutes, then rinse with water and soap.

Ta-Da! Now getting cleaning!

Guess who’s back….

ME! It was a hectic semester, I wrote over 100 pages, passed 7 classes, defended a thesis, and GRADUATED. Woo hoo! It was nerve wrecking towards the end, and at one point, I didn’t know if I was going to complete everything, but in the end I did. At graduation, I was so surprised the President of the university acknowledged me because I graduated with four separate degrees (See? I really am crazy). My face was on the jumbotron, and all I could think was “Wish I spent more time getting ready”. Oh well, I was in the midst of  packing up my apartment. Luckily, I have the bestest friend in the world who came up for 5 days to help. My parents, brother and the two of us spent 3ish days moving me out. (To be fair, we only spent a couple hours each day because we had other things to do) I learned a lot about how to pack and move. In the next coming posts, I intend to share what I have learned. Here is a sneak peak of how my parents garage looks now, please don’t be frightened……
